Bambec has proved at least as effective and as well tolerated as terbutaline in controlling asthma symptoms in children aged 2–12 years for periods of up to 12 months. Bambec is the only once-daily, long-acting beta2-agonist and the only once-daily oral medication available as a pleasant-tasting solution as well as a tablet. Both these factors enhance compliance, which can be a problem in childhood asthma, making Bambec especially suitable for children.

Twelve children aged 3–6 years received Bambec oral solution, either 10 mg in the morning or 5 mg morning and evening. Both groups had improvements in PEF, asthma symptoms, and use of rescue medication. Bambec was well tolerated.

Bambec, given once or twice daily, results in improvement in asthma symptoms

Mean (SEM) morning and evening PEF after administration of Bambec for 1 week to 12 asthmatic pre-school children (aged 3–6 years).

2. Bambec (Bambuterol). Oral solution and tablets for children. A monograph, 1997, ISBN 1859390633

62 children aged 6–12 years completed a study comparing Bambec 10 mg twice daily, and 20 mg once daily in the evening, with placebo. Those taking Bambec used significantly less rescue medication during the night, had less awakenings, and had significantly improved lung function. Bambec was well tolerated. Twice-daily dosing caused more side effects, suggesting once-daily dosage as the appropriate treatment regimen.

Bambec, given once or twice daily, improves morning and evening PEF

Mean morning PEF was increased significantly compared with the placebo treatment group. Furthermore, the mean evening PEF was also increased significantly in both treatment groups. No statistically significant differences in PEF measurements were found between the two Bambec dosing regimens.
Data on file, AstraZeneca.

3. Kuusela A-L, et al. Eur Respir J 1997; 10 (Suppl. 25): 219S–20S

Bambec 10 mg in the evening was compared with terbutaline 0.075 mg/kg body weight in 157 asthmatic children aged 2–5 years. Asthma symptoms were halved, use of rescue medication reduced during day and night, and PEF values improved both morning and evening. Both treatments were equally effective with a similar safety profile.

Bambec 10 mg once daily, given in the evening, is as effective as terbutaline given three-times daily

4. Bambec (Bambuterol). Oral solution and tablets for children. A monograph, 1997, ISBN 1859390633

Bambec (0.5 mg/kg body weight) is an effective bronchodilator, improving frequency dependence of resistance and reactance.

5. Note:

Frequency dependence of resistance = a measure of the unevenness of ventilation due to disturbed patency of the peripheral airways; Reactance = a measure of elastic and mass inertial properties of the respiratory system.

Bambec improves respiratory resistance and reactance

Mean values for total respiratory resistance, frequency dependence of resistance, and reactance after administration of a single dose of Bambec 0.25 mg/kg and 0.5 mg/kg body weight to 24 pre-school children (3–5 years). Both of the two single doses of Bambec resulted in statistically significant bronchodilating effects compared with placebo.
Data on file, AstraZeneca.
