Symbicort in asthma

Symbicort SMART® treats the inflamation with every inhalation, wheather used for maintenance or relief

Symbicort® Turbuhaler® provides both the anti-inflammatory budesonide (Pulmicort®) and the rapid- and long-lasting bronchodilator formoterol (Oxis®) in the same inhaler.

Symbicort SMART® is Symbicort Maintenance And Reliever Therapy in one inhaler and is a new treatment approach for asthma. With Symbicort SMART, the underlying inflammation is treated with every inhalation. It is also a simple regimen since a separate short-acting bronchodilator is no longer needed.

With Symbicort SMART®, patients take a maintenance dose of Symbicort in line with normal practice to establish asthma control and take additional inhalations ‘as needed’ of Symbicort if symptoms occur, to provide both rapid symptom relief and increased asthma control.

Symbicort SMART has been shown to provide superior asthma control compared with fixed dosing with either an inhaled corticosteroid alone or an inhaled corticosteroid/long-acting b2-agonist (LABA) combination + separate short-acting b-agonist (SABA) (Kuna et al 2007; O’Byrne et al 2005; Rabe et al 2006a,b; Scicchitano et al 2004; Vogelmeier et al 2005).

The reliever inhalations of Symbicort should be taken in response to asthma symptoms but are not intended for regular prophylactic use, eg before exercise. The prophylactic use of Symbicort, eg before exercise, has not been studied. For such use, a separate rapid-acting bronchodilator should be considered.
